As we sit in the freezing climes, I’m sure I’m not the only person dreaming about upcoming holidays. Where are you thinking this year? Looking for a beach holiday? Something by the pool? Maybe a city break, or even a staycation? Kinky days (and nights) out for fetish fans who are sick of dating sites Or how about packing your best latex and jetting off somewhere to enjoy a different kind of hedonism? We’re lucky enough to live in a country that is home to kink clubs such as Torture Garden, and conventions such as Eroticon. But where do you go when the kind of sightseeing you’re into doesn’t include the local ruins? Let’s set off on a round-the-world trip to some of the world’s best sex parties.
Europe
‘I’ve just spent a week in a latex puppy suit in Berlin’
Berlin: Mere hours away is the city that has become world-famous for it’s hedonistic, open-minded, artsy approach to all things life and sex. When asking a friend if they wanted to meet up for a drink one night, he replied: ‘I’ve just spent a week in a latex puppy suit in Berlin.’ One of the most infamous clubs is Berghain, a techno-filled warehouse which will stay open for days, mainly because it seems that once people are in, they want to stay in for fear of never being allowed past the bouncers ever again. I’m 36, so the thought of queuing for hours and not being let in just because I don’t look sullen enough is enough to make me stay at home with the vibrator. If you’re looking for something more opulent, the parties at Castle Milkersdorf sound much more laid back: opulent surroundings, castle location, and no techno.
Copenhagen: Once a year, Copenhagen hosts the Kinky Salon (or what used to be called ‘Kinky Copenhagen’) a fun, playful, sexy festival that invites all sizes, shapes, genders and disability statuses. You have to bring a PAL with you (Pervy Activity Liaison), so you have the reassurance of being there with at least one friend to help everything stay safe, sane and consensual. It’s as secretive as it is sexy, with few details about tickets or dates unless you subscribe to the mailing list by giving them a few details about yourself, and how you can help the community. Personally, I love the openness and community feel of this, but I can absolutely understand if you prefer the dark, anonymous corners of somewhere like Berghain. As long as you roll your eyes at any mention of The Little Mermaid, you’ll fit right in with the locals.
The US
San Francisco: You can’t really be a fully fledged member of the kink community without having heard of the Folsom Street Fair. On 30th September, 200,000 people are expected to descend on the city to enjoy dance arenas, food drink, live demonstrations and exhibitors selling toys and equipment to fetish enthusiasts. It’s more like a huge fetish fair than a sex party as the event is hosted outside and therefore subject to normal ‘lewd behaviour’ laws. There is, though, after-parties galore where people can ‘enjoy’ their new purchases.
New Orleans: While the amateurs might be heading to Mardi Gras, more seasoned enthusiasts might want to check out Naughty In N’Awlins, a five-day ‘couples lifestyle convention’. It has workshops and classes, as well as play parties and entertainment. It also hosts the world’s first, and only, swingers’ parade. However, it’s very much for heterosexual couples so if you’re looking for something a bit more gender-fluid, NOLA also has it’s own Kinky Salon event. Stressing that they are not a ‘swinger’s party with hetero-normative and male-controlled spaces’, New Orleans definitely has something for everyone.
Thailand
I can’t mention sex parties throughout the world without a tip of the hat to Bangkok. Not just because it’s all in the name. Thailand is known for ‘sex tourism’, which gets a pretty bad rap from the morality police. No, not everyone who sells sex is coerced. In fact, Thai sex-workers have created their own museum in Nonthaburi, with ‘No more sewing machines’ emblazoned across the entrance – a reaction to the women wanting workers’ rights, not 12-hour shifts in sweat shops. It doesn’t take much googling to find something for everyone, but most of it does seem to involve sex workers rather than overly-friendly get-togethers.
